Bloggers Common Questions #3: What Subject Should My Blog Be About?

July 17th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Another very common question for people considering blogging for money online, is what should I blog about?
Now the answer to this question is not a straight formula nor does the blogging community in general all agree on the factors that impact how you decide on what subject to blog about.

There is a school of thought that says that you should only blog about things that you know about or are interested in. The rationale behind this is that if you want to offer valuable content to your visitors, then knowing something about the subject helps as visitors can very quickly spot a blog that has articles with little or no value. Unfortunately in this day and age where information is so readily available, you do not often get a second chance with a visitor who might visit your site hoping to find out about subject “x” only to find posts that do not really live up to what they are looking for. The visitor will very quickly click away from your site and its a very high probability that they will not come back.

If you are do not know a great deal about the subject matter but you are interested in it, then the school of thought states that this is good because you’re natural curiosity and interest will motivate you to research the subject, and then you will be able to write about it.

To this little blogger, both of these points do make sense. In my very early days of blogging I decided to blog about a subject that I knew was paying well in Google Adsense clicks and had great affiliate programs, but one that I knew very little about, and the subject was in fact quite dry and of little interest to me. My thinking was that I’d be motivated by the fact that I could monetize the sites well and when the money came in, then I would be interested in it! Well, to be honest, I still think that this would have been true, the problem was that because I knew little about the subject and had little interest in it, my knowledge of the subject didn’t go pass a shallow level. Thus the content that I was offering on my blog were not of great value to visitors of the sites. I wrote one or two good articles, and the rest were articles that were downloaded from article sites. So the issue was that even when I got visitors to come to the blog, none of them would stay very long as there was no real value for them and this, of course, meant that the blog was not monetizing well.

However, having said all of this, I do not believe that this applies all the time. In fact, one important thing to consider is whether or not the things you know about and are interested in are actually niche subjects or whether there is a huge amount of competition within those subjects. Its not that you cannot monetize well from subjects that have huge competition, its that its often harder and may take a lot more time than subjects where there is a niche market and not a lot of competition.

In this case, its often suggested to think of subjects that you might not know much about or may not be that interested in. If you view the blog as an income generating business, then you should be motivated to make it work despite the fact that you may not know a great deal about the subject nor have that much interest in it. If you did your keyword research and found a great niche that people were searching for and not a great deal of competition out there and that you believe you can monetize well, then I think this should answer your question as to what to blog about.

So, unfortunately there isn’t a clear cut formula that will give you the answer to this question. There are several considerations to take into account. You should do your research on the keywords, decide whether you want to pursue a subjects that have a lot of competition or whether they are in fact niche subjects. You should decide whether you can learn about the subject to a level where you are providing value to your visitors - this would be easier of course if there isn’t a great deal of competition on the subject.

At the end of the day, what’s important is to consider what your targeted visitor wants to read about. If you can provide them value they will visit your blog and chances are they will revisit it, subscribe to your newsletter, recommend your blog to others, click on your Adsense links and purchase your affiliate marketing products, which is what you want.

You touched on it, but in some ways I think you almost missed the boat on this particular one. I know a few people who make a few dollars who started blogging to make money (actually I know a lot more than a few).

But the real money to be had in blogging is generally found on those blogs that did not set out with the purpose of making money.

The blog and the reader base is far more important than the intent or desire to make money. In the end, if your driving force is to make money, building the reader base will be very difficult.
